When a tooth becomes infected or the nerve inside the tooth becomes irreversibly damaged, root canal treatment can often save the natural tooth and avoid extraction.
Our practice provides advanced endodontic treatment, ranging from routine primary root canal treatment to complex retreatment and surgical procedures. Treatment is carried out by Dr Ridhwan Ahmed, a dentist with a specialist interest in endodontics, with a particular focus on the management of complex cases.

Primary Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment removes infected or damaged tissue from inside the tooth before carefully cleaning, disinfecting and sealing the root canal system.
Modern techniques allow us to treat even anatomically complex teeth with the aim of achieving a predictable, long-lasting result.
Root Canal Retreatment
Occasionally, a previously root-treated tooth can develop persistent or recurrent infection. In these situations, non-surgical root canal retreatment may provide an opportunity to save the tooth.
Retreatment involves carefully removing the previous root filling material, identifying and addressing any untreated or inadequately treated canals, thoroughly disinfecting the root canal system and placing a new root filling.
Where appropriate, advanced imaging such as CBCT may be used to help identify complex anatomy and determine the most appropriate approach.
Separated Instrument Removal
Occasionally, a small dental instrument can fracture and become separated within a root canal during previous treatment.
Depending on its position, accessibility and the condition of the tooth, it may be possible to remove a separated instrument using specialised techniques, allowing treatment of the underlying root canal system to continue.
Every case is assessed individually, as attempting removal is not always appropriate and can carry a risk of further weakening or perforating the tooth.
Apicectomy u2013 Surgical Endodontics
When infection persists around the end of a root-treated tooth despite previous treatment, or when conventional retreatment is not suitable, endodontic microsurgery (apicectomy) may be considered.
An apicectomy involves accessing the area around the root through the gum and bone, removing the inflamed or infected tissue and the affected portion of the root. The end of the root is then sealed to prevent further bacterial leakage.
This can provide an opportunity to retain a natural tooth that might otherwise require extraction.
